Victorian Diptych

(Click on title to view painting via the blog page)

I just completed a 24x30 inch commission of the Albert Brown house, shown below. It was an historical painting, showing my client's grandmother on her horse in front of the house. I love our stately and grand 'ladies' that line Little Lake Street in quaint Mendocino and often paint them from many different angles. I spotted two tiny panels on my shelf today and decided to paint the house again, along with the Blair House (made famous by the TV show Murder She Wrote) in miniature this time. Hope you like the small and the big of it.

Fanciful Fog

You guessed it. Way too tired to do a new painting even though the weather is 100 times better now than last week at the Mendocino Open Paint Out. I had a fabulous time and though I didn't win an official prize I did sell the moonlight piece and small vineyard with garden. Some fun friends gave me the MAPSA award which stands for Most Art Per Space Allotted! I did 15 paintings during the 6 day event, the last one during the 2 hour 'Quick Draw' where each artist stayed within certain boundaries along Main Street. We were supposed to talk to passersby, but we weren't very talkative let me tell you. That was a dumb idea, putting us in harm's way like that, but each intruder figured it out when we reminded them that we were under the gun! I didn't win the People's Choice award for this piece but many votes were cast in my direction and I was thrilled at the turn out afterwards. The entire event was stupendous and I really look forward to taking part again next year.

Last Light on Little Lake Road

Winter sunsets here in Mendocino delight visual junkies like me to no end. The gleam that is created off the white paint of these magnificent Victorians is nothing short of blinding and I find myself in a frenzy trying to find my camera. These houses are our prized possessions as they add grace and glamour with their historic opulence. Yes, that's the Blair House on the far right where they filmed "Murder She Wrote" but the volume of each of these beauties is quite diminished by viewing them from the side. What's wonderful though is how the sunlight has them all dressed up for the parade of viewers, people like me that are charmed year after fabulous year.

Local Landmark

Not long ago, I had a bunch of time to kill while waiting for a friend and was able to catch a slightly different angle of "Jessica Fletcher's" house. The arbor goes to the house next door, but certainly adds an element of grace and balance to the other whites in the painting dotcha think? I have to say that it's a bit of a challenge in a town this size to continue to find new things to paint, but thankfully the landmarks are worth repeating and this one in particular eh? One visual delight after another continues to make my life full and fabulous, that's for sure and for certain.

Murder She Wrote

Jessica Fletcher has spent time in this house as it was used as the set for the once famous television series, Murder She Wrote. It is known here as The Blair House and is now a B&B. Visitors wander around town looking for it, but thankfully don't see any evidence other than heresay. Our best buddy Rick Sacks the famous artist/sign painter created signs for the show that presented our sleepy little burg as Cabot Cove Maine. Maybe you want to check out some of the old episodes and take a walk down memory lane, literally and figuratively. Besides this little piece, check out the pics below too.

Dan Hitchcock, my very own Dad, posed yesterday for a portrait group that I attend on most Monday mornings and you'll see what I did in honor of his 80th birthday which happens to be today, the 8th of May.
