Old World Portico

This colorful and textural portico was the gracious entry of a French farmhouse that we stayed in one year. It was a tiny village near Carpentras and surprisingly, we were on the Tour de France route and were able to make posters and wave to them as they zipped by. It's not easily apparent, but this painting was done with a palette knife and has lots of yummy texture which makes it almost feel three dimensional. I made the mistake of telling the hosts that I especially liked goat cheese, not realizing how many STINKY varieties there were! Since then I've been more specific about asking for the mild, young cheeses, but it made for great laughs amoungst our group after we left this otherwise fabulous place.
